The Devil Wears Sneakaz - Custom Show 2007
03 Nov 2006 2

The launch of the first Sneakafiend is planned for next year. The plan is to hold the event cum exhibition at a local (Singapore) toy store, a sneaker store, art gallery or perhaps a combination of some or all over different days.

The quest is currently on to invite various talented name artists/designers from all over the world involved in the street, sneaker and toy scenes (and maybe other disciplines for a fresh perspective!) to customise some Sneakafiendz and Sneakaz!

The customised Sneakaz will be released for sale later. They can be collected separately without owning a Sneakatoy but owning the toy allows you to put it to use. The full customised Sneakafiendz may or may not be up for sale.

We are glad to announce an extremely talented and growing list of participants! :-
• Ted Stilson (CA)
Jamous (FR)
adFunture Crew (HK)
Simone Legno (Tokidoki) (IT)
Akira Wakui (JP)
Mad Barbarians (JP)
Shin Tanaka (JP)
Play Imaginative Crew (SG)
Dave White (UK)
Sichi (UK)

• Kaiks (US)
Ryan Crippen (rc44) (US)

We are also opening several slots to the public! Send a mail to customz @sneakahood.com (close up the space) with references to your work (links to your portfolio site, sites you've designed, pics of custom toys etc.). A selected handful of participants will be chosen to join in this initiative and get their customs exhibited right there next with the design greats! Please read the terms and conditions first though.

Sneakafiendz Prototype
2 Nov 2006

The prototype of Azazel has just been completed but there are plans to make further modifications to improve the joints, overall finish quality and possibly enlarge the horns to give our regal fiend a demeanour more worthy of his stature. In the Sneakafiendz banner above, you will be able to get a sneak peek of the secret version of Azazel. A smoky, dark version of our fiery fiend lurks in the corners of Sneakahell.

Foot Prints
13 Aug 2006

The kind folk at Play Imaginative are not only participating in our initiative, but have also agreed to cover/feature/mention our planned launch event in their publication, Playtimes Magazine. We are also talking to a new sneaker magazine, Sneakpeekmag, who are looking to cover the event. Since their first issue is set for December 2006, the event will probably be featured in the second issue. We are also very happy to have support from the great folks at Vinylpulse and Vinylabuse.

If you run an artist/urban/sneaker/toy magazine (online or print) or forum and are interested in covering/featuring/mentioning our toy, do drop me a mail at kay @sneakahood.com (close up the space).

A peek into the making of Azazel
20 Jul 2006

Initially planned to be a mini-fiend platform toy, Azazel was later designed as a full-blown character since the Sneakahood concept focuses on the shoes as the platform canvas. Conceptualised very roughly on pencil then later designed digitally.

The pictures depict the more or less final designs of the production piece. There is a mix of asian influence in the tattoo design. Plans are to serialise the toys under the arm. Initially they were to be serialised under the shoes, but since the shoes may be swapped away for another pair in future, it is better for the number to follow the toy instead.

But the original shoes that come with the toy are unlikely to be re-produced in the same design again, so that makes them just as limited as the toy quantity.

The toy has currently been sculpted and is awaiting prototyping. As expected there were several changes during the sculpt stages like size, proportions and facial details. Here are some pics of the sculpt :-

The first picture shows the original intepretation of the design into a 3D platform. An excellent job by the sculptor which made it almost painful to make changes to it. The browbones were thickened and the goatee was done up more stylistically to move away from an action-figure look to something more urban vinyl. The shoulders and arms were also beefed up.

The sneakers originally had the laces carved as part of the sculpt, but to be truly blank platform, they were removed.

F.A.Qs on the Sneakafiendz
19 Jul 2006

Who are the Sneakafiendz?
The Sneakafiendz are several beings from the outer planes, some of who are based on mythological and legendary creatures. They are all sneakerheads who have forgone collecting souls for soles (kicks).

How many are there?
There are currently plans for about 4-5 fiendz, starting with the first fiend, Azazel. There may be sub-lines dealing with fiends from specific cultures/mythologies/legends but that is on the drawing board.

What are the production numbers like?
Azazel will be launched at 500 pcs (all serialised) in "semi-blind" box format. The toys will be wrapped in sealed bags but there is only one chase variant limited to 50 pcs (serialised 1-50), of which about 40-45 pcs will be mixed in for public sale. Referred to as "semi-blind" because it's not a hunt for many variants to complete the set, but more like you buy it expecting to get the regular version, but there's a chase mixed in to add a little to the collecting fun. Aside from the 500 pcs, there are also 50 blanks that are only given to partners/collaborating artists.

Are there plans for other colourways?
This is not confirmed yet but we'll try to avoid releasing a gazillion colours to dazzle consumers. =) It is more likely that the blank Sneakaz and possibly artist designed production Sneakaz will be released first.

What are the dimensions?
Azazel will be about 6-7inches tall. The Sneakaz are about 2.5 inches long. There are no confirmed details on the rest of the characters but based on the Sneakahood concept, all shoes will be interchangeable.

When is the expected release date for the first fiend?
Probably at year's end or early next year, pending any delays in production (it always seems to happen but let's hope for the best).
